llms.txt

llms.txt is a proposed standard: a markdown file at the root of a site that gives large language models a curated, easy-to-read map of your most important content. It was proposed in 2024 by Jeremy Howard (llmstxt.org).
The idea
A normal web page is cluttered with navigation, scripts, and ads that waste an LLM's limited context window. llms.txt offers a clean, linked summary, "here is what this site is, and here are the key pages", so a model can find the good parts fast.
Should you add one?
Be clear-eyed: as of 2026, no major AI provider has publicly committed to reading llms.txt, so it is low-cost insurance rather than a proven traffic lever. It is quick to add and harmless, just do not expect measurable results from it yet. Think of it as an early sitemap for LLMs.
