European WordPress alternative

October 21, 2026

"European WordPress alternative" is a search people run for two reasons: they want a provider established in the EU, or they want to know where their data and their readers' data end up. Both have a documented answer, for WordPress and for BeeRanked, and the line between the two is kept where the documents put it.

Where BeeRanked's parts live: operated from Belgium, the editing system and database in Nuremberg, and published copies of the pages on Cloudflare's network

WordPress the software has no country

WordPress.org is an open-source project, "licensed under the GPLv2", and the WordPress trademark belongs to the WordPress Foundation, a charitable organisation (WordPress.org). The software itself can run anywhere, including on a server in your own country. The location question only arises once someone hosts it for you.

Where WordPress.com sits

WordPress.com is run by Automattic, whose press page lists "Headquarters: San Francisco, CA, USA" (Automattic). Its privacy policy names two controllers: for people in Europe and a list of other "Designated Countries", the controller is "Aut O'Mattic A8C Ireland Ltd" in Dublin; for everyone else it is "Automattic Inc." in San Francisco, which the policy calls "our US-based company" (Automattic privacy policy).

On data location, WordPress.com's own support page is direct: "WordPress.com servers store personal data on servers located both in the US and in the EU. It is not possible to restrict the data associated with your site to a single geographic location." The same page says transfers are covered by "the Standard Contractual Clauses" in its data processing agreement (WordPress.com support).

None of that is a fault. It is the arrangement, and it is documented. If your requirement is an EU controller, WordPress.com offers one. If your requirement is that data stays in one place, it says it cannot.

Where BeeRanked sits

BeeRanked is operated from Belgium. The studio where you write and the database that holds your content run in a data centre in Nuremberg, Germany, operated by netcup GmbH of Karlsruhe, whose European infrastructure "is located in Nuremberg (Germany), Vienna (Austria) and Amsterdam (The Netherlands)" (netcup).

Published pages are a different matter. When you publish, a copy of the page is served from Cloudflare's network, which spans "348 cities · 8 regions" according to Cloudflare, 57 of them in Europe (Cloudflare). That is what makes a page fast for a reader in Lisbon and a reader in Singapore alike. A public web page is public in every country by design; what stays in Germany is the source of truth, your drafts, your account and your settings.

Published pages carry no third-party scripts unless you add them yourself. There is no analytics beacon and no cookie banner on a BeeRanked hub by default, because nothing on the page needs consent.

GDPR applies to both, and to everyone

The regulation does not care where a company is based when it serves people in the Union. Article 3 says it "applies to the processing of personal data of data subjects who are in the Union by a controller or processor not established in the Union, where the processing activities are related to: (a) the offering of goods or services" to them (Regulation (EU) 2016/679). So "GDPR compliant" is a duty, not a feature, and any provider selling in Europe carries it. The questions that separate providers are the ones above: where the controller is established, where the data is stored, and whether that can be restricted.

The practical differences

  • Contract and invoice. BeeRanked is operated from Belgium and its terms are governed by Belgian law. Prices in euros include VAT: the Standard plan is 59 euros a month billed yearly, or 69 euros monthly.

  • Data location. Content and account data in Germany; published pages served worldwide, as explained above.

  • Support. A small team in the Central European time zone, on email.

  • Portability. Your content can be exported, and a blog can be imported from any site with a sitemap or a feed, so moving in or out is an afternoon's task.

What this page does not claim

It does not claim that an EU provider ranks better, that Google prefers EU hosting, or that data stored in Germany is safer by nature. It does not claim that BeeRanked's published pages are stored only in the EU, because they are served from a worldwide network. If any of those are hard requirements for you, ask us before you sign up, and we will tell you what we can and cannot do.
